International Day of the Girl Child

The first International Day of the Girl Child will be celebrated on October 11, 2012. On this day, we hope to raise awareness of the widespread violence and discrimination against girls throughout the world.

Abused, treated as goods, subjected to genital mutilations and sexual violence, girls are too rarely protected, even though their safety and well being often demand special attention. Today, 70% of children who are kept from attending schools are female. On average, girls are also three times more likely than boys to suffer from malnutrition. Every year, 2 million girls between the ages of 5 and 15 become victims of the slave trade.

It is essential to uphold children’s basic rights, particularly with respect to equality between genders.

On this special day, we encourage you to get informed about the situation of girls throughout the world, and take action against the injustices against them. You can make a difference by spreading the news and fighting for children’s rights.
